Problem #2: Overtraining! We've all seen it. A wrestler starts the season feeling strong, and winning lots of matches. But as the season continues, he begins to get weaker, tired and hurt. He starts losing matches he should have won! This is usually because he is constantly breaking down his body in practice, without enough good nutrition and rest to allow him to recover and keep his strength. Many coaches mistakenly believe that wrestlers just need to work harder and harder to overcome this... BIG MISTAKE! If a wrestler can't recover from the daily practices, matches and 'under-eating' they will become weaker, and will eventually get burnt out and hurt.

Problem 3: Undertraining! Another big mistake that wrestlers and wrestling teams make each season is not keeping their body's strong enough. Let's face it, when wrestlers are younger and inexperienced the one who knows more wrestling moves wins. But as you get in to high school your strength, speed and conditioning becomes an important factor. But wrestlers have school, practice, matches, homework, daily chores etc. that all make it tough to fit in a workout. This is why wrestlers clothes start falling off them and they become skinny and weak as the State Championships get closer.

Who Am I and Why Should You Listen To Me?

My name is Steve Preston. I'm a Sports Performance Specialist in Southeastern, Virginia. I'm a 25 year veteran to strength and conditioning, and achieved a MSed, and BS in Physical Education. I'm also a certified Youth Conditioning Specialist and a member of the AAPT.
